Department of Health and Human Services - Secretary's Operations Center

The Secretary's Operations Center (SOC) is the focal point for synthesis of critical public health and medical information on behalf of the United States Government.
During emergency situations or exigent circumstances, the Secretary's Operations Center coordinates incident management system responses for the Department of the Health and Human Services.

 The Technology

An existing web-based health asset tracking application that is currently in production at HHS required a geospatial interface.

The leadership of the agency requested improvements including better access to the statistics collected on a weekly basis. It was also believed that improvements in the user interface would increase user traffic.

 The Solution

We took advantage of the opportunity to explore the MS Virtual Earth API and found it to be more feature–rich and better documented than the Google Maps counterpart.

The examples were easy to follow and helped this rusty developer get up-to-speed quickly. Since we are at it, we decided to integrate the use of a basic GeoRSS feed for good measure.

 The Results

The new application consists of a single page with a black “widget” look designed to run for a minimum common denominator display resolution of 800 X 600. The application effectively becomes a “module” that will be integrated into the existing online survey system as well as within the existing portal at the Secretary’s Operation Center.
