Traffic Violation Report - USMC

Automation of a Business Process using SharePoint.

 The Technology

MCB Camp Pendleton maintains a SharePoint web site that has a number of documents and general information for the people who reside on the base. One of these documents is the Traffic Violation Report (TVR) that can be filled out and submitted to report moving violations within the base limits. Unfortunately, this document is hard to find and requires a person to print it out and submit the information. The details of the incident typically degrade over time, so the Provost Marshall's Office wanted an easier way to submit the report.

 The Solution

The Technology Associates team approached the project using innovative methodology called the Agile Process that allows for a staged delivery of the work product. A quick prototype was assembled using a stand-alone web-based application written using the .NET technologies as a proof-of-concept and point of discussion during the requirement gathering process. The application was written using the evolutionary prototype method allowing developers to migrate the functionality into components that could be hosted in the existing SharePoint environment. The results were that the customer had a working model within days. The iterative process allowed developers to incorporate changes quickly and to migrate the resulting functionality to a component (Web Part) that will be hosted within the production SharePoint site.

 The Results

Conversion of the Traffic Violation Report to a web-based application provided a number of benefits. The data is now stored in a database allowing more flexibility for reporting and audit trail. The Alerts functionality provided by SharePoint allows managers to track down the submission of new reports in real-time. Integration with SharePoint allowed customers to manage the resulting application via the SharePoint user interface without the need for re-programming. The success of this implementation has paved the road for the automation of other business processes.
